About 2525 Blocker Road
Own a piece of an Historical Plantation! Cedar Grove, the Henry Ware Plantation, was originally part of a 640 acre plantation. (Some records show over 8,000 acres) The home, a two story Greek Revival is a four square floor plan with a hipped roof and double hung windows on both stories, built of locally made brick, hand-hewn timbers and square nails started in 1847 and completed in 1852. Pier and beam, the piers are reported to be 9' deep!. This home boasts 4-5 bedrooms and 8 fireplaces. Before the Civil War Cedar Grove contained a school house, cotton gin, brick kiln, milk house, factory sheds, slave cabins and an overseers cottage. Henry Ware was a leading cotton planter in Harrison County and the first to erect a steel screw cotton press in the state. He also grew large crops of cultivated wheat and was responsible for bringing some of the first grain reapers to East TX. Ware also built a steam powered textile mill and tannery on the plantation. It produced supplies for the Confederate Army troops stationed within Harrison County, although he himself opposed secession. Ownership of the home was kept within the Ware family descendants through June of 2019. There is a stocked spring fed lake lined with cypress trees. Walk through the towering trees that whisper memories from times past to find producing pecan trees and a few fruit trees. Live off the land!! This home will require restoration/renovation, currently there is no kitchen (the original kitchen would have been outside the home). Previous kitchen structure add on was removed from back of house. It would take the right person or persons to understand this unique property's story, it's history and give it new life. This is also a wonderful Commercial Opportunity! A fabulous setting for a Wedding or Event Venue. Acreage could also be developed for a subdivision or unique RV resort on this historic land.
